What is it?

Stenosis of the spinal canal of the lumbar spine is a chronic pathology when the spinal canal narrows and the structures that are in it are compressed.

The disease progresses slowly and does not disappear on its own. Over time, patients need surgery. As a rule, the disease affects people in old age, more often it progresses in the lumbar spine. The lack of timely treatment causes a person’s disability.

Why does stenosis of the spinal canal occur?

Stenosis of the lumbosacral spine can develop due to congenital or acquired causes. Idiopathic, or congenital stenosis of the spinal canal, occurs when the spinal arch is thickened or shortened, the height of the vertebral body decreases, or the leg is shortened.

Acquired changes are much more common. The reasons for their appearance are as follows:

  • Osteochondrosis, displacement of the vertebrae, hernia of the lumbosacral zone, and other degenerative processes;
  • Injuries;
  • Medical interventions – the consequences of operations on the spine, scarring, and adhesions;
  • A number of other diseases – rheumatoid arthritis, acromegaly, tumors;
  • Sprain or induration of the ligamentum flavum of the spine.
