Treatment of chronic heart failure

Medications (such as ACE inhibitors, beta-blockers, and diuretics) are used in chronic heart failure. Medications are used to prevent complications and improve quality of life. ACE inhibitors and beta-blockers can prolong life, but they need to be taken regularly and under medical supervision to be effective.

In addition, rhythm therapy (for the treatment of cardiac arrhythmias) and implantation of a three-chamber pacemaker are used.

A defibrillator is also used as a pacemaker to counteract dangerous heart rhythm disturbances in severe conditions. This treatment is also called resynchronization therapy. Physical therapy is an important part of successful treatment.

Is there a complete cure for heart failure?

There is no cure for this disease. However, the patient’s life expectancy can be significantly increased. It depends on the type of heart failure, as well as the person’s age, other illnesses, and lifestyle. Treatment of diseases that accompany heart failure (e.g., high blood pressure), a healthy lifestyle, and following a doctor’s advice can lead to a better long-term prognosis.
