Caries is diagnosed by dentists during a visual examination or instrumental examination. The patient’s complaints help to diagnose caries. The main treatment for caries is to remove the affected area of the tooth and fill it.

The affected area is completely removed and the site is disinfected. The better the disinfection, the better the quality of the filler and the longer it will last.

Currently, the laser method is used to remove areas affected by dental caries. The advantages of the method are painlessness, noiselessness, and the quality of the tooth for filling.

Treatment of superficial caries is carried out in several ways. The most common of these methods is “grinding” and remineralization of carious areas of the tooth. Remineralization is performed by application or electrophoresis by injecting 1% sodium fluoride. Moderate caries is treated by removing and replacing the affected tooth area.

Treatment of deep caries requires quality skills from the doctor because at this level almost all parts of the tooth are damaged. If the dentin layer is not damaged, a filling is placed to protect the affected areas of the tooth, which consists of three layers: a healing gasket, an insulating phosphate-cemented gasket, and a permanent filling material (usually amalgam).

The filling material is selected depending on the type of damaged tooth. For teeth that are clearly visible in the oral cavity, a material that is both anatomically and aesthetically high quality is selected.

Prior to filling, the affected part of the tooth is completely removed, the tooth is disinfected, dried and the selected filling material is placed. Once the filling material is in place, the edges are smoothed and the excess parts are processed. The better the filling, the less likely it is that microorganisms will grow in it later.

Prevention of dental caries

Prevention of dental caries includes measures to prevent the formation of plaque on the teeth, the use of quality toothpaste and quality toothbrush, and strict personal hygiene of the oral cavity. If you notice that the enamel layer has softened, it is necessary to use fluoride preservatives (pastes, solutions, and varnishes).

It is recommended to regulate the consumption of carbohydrates in the diet, to consume products that contain high levels of calcium, and to drink filtered drinking water in environmentally unfavorable areas. For preventive purposes, it is necessary to see a dentist twice a year.
