PRK (photorefractive keratectomy) is the first excimer laser technology for vision correction for patients with a thin cornea and other structural features of the eye. This method has been used in ophthalmology since 1985.

Indications for Photorefractive keratectomy:
Myopia from – 1.0 to – 8.0 diopters.
Astigmatism up to ± 4.0 diopters.
Faster recovery after surgery.

Main advantages:
The procedure is indicated for patients with “thin” corneas.
Flapless method.
Low cost of the operation.

Main disadvantages:
As a result of the operation, the superficial epithelium and the Bowman’s membrane of the cornea are removed, leaving an open wound surface, which makes the recovery period rather unpleasant – photophobia, lacrimation, “sand” in the eyes, etc.
The superficial epithelium is restored within 2-4 days, the patient will receive complete healing and the final result after 3 months.
After the operation, the formation of hayes is possible – corneal opacities that affect the quality of vision.

Despite all the disadvantages, for some medical indications (too thin cornea, opacities, superficial scars, etc.), this method of vision correction is the only possible one.
